About laboratory

All significant world discoveries and the successes which have caused emergence of the new perspective directions of science including nanotechnologies, biotechnologies are in many respects connected with development of research devices of absolutely new generation with opportunities of carrying out thinner and deep analyses and tests. Many scientific laboratories of domestic scientific research institutes and higher education institutions worked until recently at the devices released in the 60-70th years of last century while on technical capabilities and level of reliability, ergonomics and the software modern analytical devices far left forward.

Therefore the decision to create the national and engineering laboratories of open type equipped with modern analytical devices was made at the initiative of the Head of state – the Leader of the nation N.A. Nazarbayev in 2007.

One of such laboratories – Test engineering profile regional laboratory "Constructional and Biochemical Materials" was open at the M. Auyezov Southern Kazakhstan state university (the order of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic Kazakhstan № 120 dated 15.03.2007).

Activity of Laboratory of an engineering profile is aimed at granting to scientists and being trained in possibility of carrying out in-depth scientific studies on modern devices. Such opportunity is given to scientists and experts not only university, but all and the region irrespective of departmental accessory and form of ownership of the scientific organization or HEI in which they work.

In laboratory perform some physico-chemical methods:

- High performance liquid chromatography;

- UV-spectroscopy;

- Electron microscopy and energy-analysis;

- Mass spectrometry;

- Gas chromatography mass spectrometry;

- Atomic absorption spectrometry;

- Fluorimetry;

- Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry.

In combination with the laboratory which was available at university of physical and chemical methods of researches the instrument park of Laboratory of an engineering profile created a modern laboratory complex with unique opportunities for work in the field of materials science, chemical technology, biochemistry and biotechnologies, food and pharmchemistry, petrochemistry, etc.

The laboratory has the following equipment.

1. Scanning electron microscope JSM 6490LV manufactured by JEOL (Japan) with energy dispersive microanalysis system INCA Enerjy-350 (OXFORD Instruments, UK) and a system of structural analysis of polycrystalline objects HKL Basis (OXFORD Instruments, UK). This system allows studying the fine structure of organic and inorganic materials on the nanoscale. The increase could be up to five times the increase in 300 000 times with a resolution of up to 3 nm (3 • 10-9m), is the highest resolution for this class of systems. Simultaneous analysis of the content of chemical elements from boron to uranium. In low vacuum mode allows the study of biological and polymeric materials, including oil-containing rocks.

2. Mass spectrometer with inductively coupled plasma MS Varian-820 manufactured by Varian (Australia, USA). This device allows to determine the al and isotopic composition of substances to 75 elements per minute with a sensitivity off tens percent to 10.9 percent.

3. HPLC Varian-ProStar of Varian company (Australia, USA) to perform physical and chemical analyzes of water, food, oil, natural minerals, pharmaceuticals, etc.

4 Dual beam scanning UV spectrophotometer Varian “Cary-50” (Australia, USA). The instrument used for the analysis of food, water, beverages, pharmaceuticals.

For further development laboratory and expansion research, and based on customer needs and priorities of the region by the University's funds in 2012 bought gas chromatography-mass spectrometer, liquid chromatography, Fourier-transform infrared spectrophotometer (Shimadzu, Japan).

1. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometer GCMS-QP 2010Ultra (Shimadzu, Japan), is a combination of a gas chromatograph and mass spectrometer. Designed for the detection and identification of substances and compounds that make up the food, pharmaceutical, agricultural and other products, medicinal and psychotropic drugs, biological systems, environmental monitoring.

2. Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer IR Prestige-21 (Shimadzu, Japan). Designed to study the structure of organic, organometallic, organic objects, physical and inorganic chemistry in solution or solid phase, as well as features of the electronic structure, intra-and intermolecular interactions. Also getting the absorption, transmission, ATR.

3. Liquid chromatograph LC-20 Prominence (Shimadzu, Japan). Designed for the analysis of drugs, food, vitamins, nutritional supplements, plastics, processed food and pharmaceutical industries, as well as for environmental analyzes.

Also purchased equipment which contributes to more complete and efficient use of the lab in the performance of its tasks.

The laboratory is accredited by the Accreditation System of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the requirements of ST RK ISO/IEC  17025-2007  "General requirements for the competence of testing and the gauge laboratories" (Accreditation number KZ.I.16.1048 of November 25, 2010.). Scope of accreditation: certification testing of the food industry and agricultural production, by definition, mycotoxins, benzoin pyrene, food additives in soft, low-alcohol beverages; identification coffee, drinking water, natural, underground water and waste on the content of chemical elements.

Starting in 2011, the laboratory of engineering profile is on the list (Government Resolution of 13.05.2011 № 511) organizations, which are the subjects of base funding as a research laboratory for communities. Furthermore, according to the Law on Science of RK, the laboratory is the subject of the grant and program financing.
